What is a suffix?

Suffixes are little words added to the end of a word like -ment, -ing, -er, -ed, -tion...

enjoy + ment = enjoyment
defend + ing = defending
dedicate + ed = dedicated
calculate + tion = calculation

Rule 1: When a word ends in a silent letter 'e', drop the 'e' if the suffix you are using begins with a vowel.

Example:

adore + able = adorable

calculate + ing/tion = calculating/calculation

But if the word ends in 'ce' or 'ge', you must keep the final 'e' if the suffix begins with the letters 'a' or 'o'.

Example:

change + able = changeable

courage + ous = courageous
