All insects have 3 body parts: the head, thorax (middle) and abdomen (end). They also have two antennae on their heads. They have a hard shell which is called an exoskeleton. This protects them from other animals.

Most insects are born from eggs. Young insects are called nymphs. Some insects like bees, ants and wasps live together in large groups. The largest group of insects are beetles.

About half of all insects are herbivores. This means that they only eat plants. Some insects hunt other small insects and animals. They are called predators.
