Bulgaria is 110,910 square km in size and is divided into 28 provinces which are further divided into 264 municipalities.

The flag has three horizontal stripes, white on top, green in the middle and red on the bottom.

National symbols and holidays

The national symbol of Bulgaria is the lion and their national holiday is Liberation Day, 3 March.

The rose is the national flower of Bulgaria and the gaida (bagpipes) is the national instrument.

 

Government and Economy

Bulgaria is part of the European Union and has its own currency called Lev (BGL). Its government is a parliamentary democracy.

Bulgaria is one of the poorest countries in Europe but a good place for businesses. 

The state doesn’t offer free health care anymore, instead, people pay for an insurance plan and if they need to pay for medicines, the cost is based on their income.

The country’s major industries are electricity, gas, food and beverages, machinery and equipment, chemical products and refined petroleum. It also exports clothing, footwear, iron and steel. It is a major producer of wine and produces around 70% of the world’s rose oil.

Its land has natural resources like copper, lead, bauxite, zinc, coal and timber.
