Example:

1/4 = 3/12 = 5/20

2/4 is the same as 2 lots of 1/4

2/4 of 8 = 4/8

(1/4 of 8 is 2/8.  2 lots of 1/4 of 8 is 2/8 + 2/8 = 4/8)

3/4 is the same as 3 lots of 1/4

3/4 of 12 = 9/12

(1/4 of 12 is 3/12.  3 lots of 1/4 of 12 is 3/12 + 3/12 + 3/12 = 9/12)

If you divide the bottom number (denominator) by the top number (numerator) and it equals 4, then the fraction is the same as one-quarter (1/4).

When the top number (numerator) is one-fourth of the bottom number (denominator) the fraction is a quarter.
