What is a food chain?

All living things need energy to survive. We need energy to run, jump, play and grow.

Plants get their energy from soil, water and the Sun, but humans and animals get their energy from the food they eat. Some animals eat plants and some eat other animals.

The food chain is the transfer of energy from one living being to another.

Food chains start with a plant and end with an animal.

Here’s a very simple food chain:

Plants are eaten by a mouse, the mouse is eaten by a snake and the snake is eaten by an eagle.

  • Food chains also exist under water. Underwater food chains start with tiny organisms called plankton.
