Where do humpback whales live?

Humpback whales can be found in every ocean in the world. They are the noisiest of all the whales and the males actually 'sing'.

Humpback whales are mammals and they have the longest flippers of any whale.

What do humpback whales eat?

Humpback whales feed on tiny shrimp-like krill, plankton, and small fish. These whales feed in cold waters during the summer months and migrate (move) to the tropical waters in the winter.

During the winter they fast and live off their layer of fat called blubber. Mothers and their calves swim close together and often touch one another with their flippers.

Calves feed off their mother's milk for almost a year.

Fun facts

  • Humpback whales actually have no teeth! They have baleen plates which act as a sieve, separating the water from the tiny krill they eat!
  • Humpback whales have two blowholes!
  • A group of whales is called a pod.
  • Humpback whales are omnivores meaning they eat both meat and plants.
