Religion

The main religion in Italy is Roman Catholicism. The pope himself lives in Italy, he has his own city in Rome called the Vatican City which is a mini country, it even has its own guards! Vatican City is also the smallest city in the world. 

 

Country regions

Italy is 301,230 square km in size and divided into 20 regions.

Each region is divided into provinces. 5 of the 20 regions are autonomous, meaning they can make some of their own laws.

 

Government and Economy

Italy is a republic government and the currency they use is the euro.

The major industries are tourism, textiles, cars, footwear, ceramics and food and beverages.

Italy has many natural resources like coal, mercury, zinc, pumice and natural gas and it is known for its large fields of grapes which they use to make wine. Italian wines are some of the best in the world.

Tourism helps bring a lot of money into the country, but also clothes, shoes, food, wine and cars which Italy sells to many countries around the world. 

 

The flag of Italy

The Italian flag is green, white and red. It is called the tricolore and has three vertical stripes of each colour. It is said that the green represents the country's plains and the hills of Italy, the white represents the snow-capped Alps, and the red represents the blood spilt during the wars of Italian independence.
