What is a suffix?

Suffixes are little groups of letters added to the end of a word like -ment, -ness, -ous, etc.

The suffix -ous means 'full of'.

When we add the suffix -ous to a noun it turns it into an adjective.

The word courageous means full of courage.

There are a few rules to know when adding the suffix -ous.

Rule 1: when adding -ous to words ending in 'e', the 'e' is dropped.

Example: adventure + ous = adventurous

 

Rule 2: when adding -ous to words ending in 'y', the 'y' is changed to an 'i'.

Example: fury + ous = furious

 

Rule 3: when adding -ous to words ending in 'our', our becomes 'or'.

Example: glamour + ous = glamorous
