Culture and tourist attractions

If you like cycling then you will love the Netherlands. It’s one of the most bike-friendly countries in Europe. There are over 18 million bicycles there, that’s three times as many bicycles as cars! But if you don’t feel like cycling, you can always take a boat ride on the famous canals of Amsterdam or visit thousand-year-old windmills near the village of Kinderdijk.

Many people visit the Netherlands to see the art and architecture. Flowers are also a big industry, mainly tulips. They produce billions of bulbs a year, more than any other country in the world. Keukenhof Gardens is one of the world’s largest flower gardens.

A few places still wear traditional Dutch clothing during festivals and traditional holidays. The wooden clogs called 'klompen' are a part of the outfit. The typical food eaten are dairy products and simple foods. Their sweet pastries are also very delicious.

 

Famous people 

Vincent van Gogh - was a famous painter. One of his most famous early paintings was called 'The Potato Eaters'. His later paintings were much more colourful and one of the most well-known ones is called 'Starry Night'. Van Gogh is known for cutting off a piece of his ear and sending it to a woman as a present! 

William III - also known as William III of Orange. He ruled over England, Scotland and Ireland.

Anne Frank - Anne was a young girl when she started her diary, which was found and published after her death. She wrote about her life during the Holocaust, when the Jews were forced from their homes and killed.
