What is a syllable?

A syllable is a single, unbroken sound of a written or spoken word. Syllables usually have a vowel and accompanying consonants. Sometimes syllables are called beats of spoken language. 

Have a look at the examples below. Try clapping out the syllables of each word.

Cat has one syllable

Water has two syllables - wa - ter

Bicycle has three syllables - bi - cy - cle

Category has four syllables - cat - e - gor - y
