Solving multi-step word problems

The key to solving multi-step word problems is to read the questions very carefully.

Example:

There were 20 people on the bus. 10 got off at the first stop and 7 got on.

At the second stop, 10 people got off but nobody got on. How many people are on the bus?

How to solve it:

20 people on the bus - 10 get off at the first stop = 10 people on the bus

10 + 7 people that get on = 17 people

17 people - 10 = 7

The answer is 7 people.
