How to round a number to the nearest 100

Rounding numbers to the nearest 100 means finding which 100 the number is closest to.

Counting in 100s looks like this:

100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000

To know whether to round a number up or down to the nearest 100 we need to look at the number in the tens place.

Look at the number 72

2 is in the tens place.

We know 720 is in between 700 and 800 but it is closer to 700 than 800.

700, 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, 780, 790, 800

If the number in the tens place is less than 5 we round down.

If the number in the tens place is 5 or higher we round up.

720 would be rounded down to 700

760 would be rounded up to 800

750 would be rounded up to 800

Now, let's start the activities for level 1. Can you round each number to the nearest 100?
