How to round a number to the nearest 1,000

Rounding numbers to the nearest 1,000 means finding which 1,000 the number is closest to.

Counting in 1,000s looks like this:

1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000, 7,000, 8,000, 9,000, 10,000

To know whether to round a number up or down to the nearest 1,000, we need to look at the number in the hundreds place.

Look at the number 7,200

2 is in the hundreds place.

We know 7,200 is in between 7,000 and 8,000 but it is closer to 7,000 than 8,000.

7,000, 7,100, 7,200, 7,300, 7,400, 7,500, 7,600, 7,700, 7,800, 7,900, 8,000

If the number in the hundreds place is less than 5 we round down.

If the number in the hundreds place is 5 or higher we round up.

7,200 would be rounded down to 7,000.

7,600 would be rounded up to 8,000.

7,500 would be rounded up to 8,000.
