First Flight

In 1903, the Wright brothers built an airplane that had wooden propellers that the men had carved themselves. It also had an engine. They called it the 'Wright Flyer'.

On December 17, 1903, Orville made the first flight in the airplane.

The plane flew 120 feet in 12 seconds. Later that day, Wilbur flew 852 feet in 59 seconds. The Wright brothers had made history.

The Wright brothers wanted to make their airplane better. In 1904 they built the 'Flyer II'. By July 1905 Flyer III had been built and by September it became the world's first practical airplane.

The longest flight that was made by the Flyer III took 39 minutes and covered 24 miles.
