What are coordinating conjunctions?

Coordinating conjunctions are used to connect sentences, words and phrases. They act as a kind of glue, linking the text together to help the sentences flow smoothly.

And, but, or and so are all coordinating conjunctions.

 

And is used to connect words or sentences that go together.
He bought a new suit and got a haircut.

 

But is used to show a contrast.
I like chocolate, but I hate chocolate cake.

 

Or is used to show a choice.
You can have the red apple or the green apple.

 

So is used to show that something is happening because of something else.
I don't have any money, so I can't buy the magazine.
