Using calculators in primary schools

06-12-2011
In the news lately there has been an article about using calculators in primary schools. Some Ministers have said that children are over reliant on these devices and that calculators are damaging our children's numeracy skills. At Primary Leap we have hundreds of numeracy worksheets for primary school children and would certainly encourage parents to let their children work out their answers without the use of a calculator. Children need to know how to work out sums but let us not forget that calculators can be fun to use and there is no harm in using them to work out large calculations and understand how they function as your child will definitely be using them later in senior school for more complex calculations. It's common sense really. Don't let the calculator take over the fundamental skills your child can do with their brains. Don't forget the brain is still superior to the calculator.
