Use of the forms 'a' and 'an'
If a word starts with a consonant sound, we should use 'a.' If a word starts with a vowel sound, we should use 'an.' When in doubt, say the word out loud and listen for the sound at the beginning. If it sounds like a consonant, use 'a.' If it sounds like a vowel, use 'an.' This handy worksheet asks students to complete the sentences by writing 'a' or 'an'. Encourage Year 3 students to practise using 'a' and 'an' in their writing and speaking, and to ask for help when they're not sure which one to use.
